Retail Business Services (RBS) supports Amazon's Retail business growth WW through three core tasks. These are (a) Selection, where RBS sources, creates and enriches ASINs to drive GMS growth; (b) Defect Elimination, where RBS resolves inbound supply chain defects and develops root cause fixes to improve free cash flow; and (c) supports operational process for WW Retail teams where there is an air gap in the tech stack. The tech team in RBS develops intelligent automation powered by GenAI, LLM and Machine/Deep Learning to scale execution of highly complex tasks that currently require human cognitive skills. Our solutions ensure that information in Amazon's catalog is complete, correct and comprehensive enough to give Amazon customers a great shopping experience every time.

About the role

We are seeking a Software Development Engineer II to join the SAMAI team and help us push the boundaries of what's possible with Generative AI in retail automation. As an SDE2, you will not just write code, you will architect systems that think. You will design scalable, distributed platforms that orchestrate LLM powered agents, build robust pipelines that process millions of data points daily, and make critical design trade offs that directly influence a multi billion dollar business. You will work at the intersection of Generative AI, distributed systems and real world business impact. Every system you build will be tested against the unforgiving scale of Amazon's catalog, hundreds of millions of ASINs, dozens of marketplaces and billions of customer interactions. You will collaborate closely with Applied Scientists and senior engineers to turn cutting edge research into production systems that work at scale. You will constantly stretch the boundaries of innovation to tackle the business challenges.

Key job responsibilities

We are looking for a sharp, experienced Software developer with a diverse skillset and background. As a SDE-2, your work is consistently of high quality. You solve difficult problems, applying appropriate technologies and best practices. You work with your team to invent, design and build software that is stable and performant. You are proficient in a broad range of design approaches and know when it is appropriate to use them (and when it is not). You limit the use of short-term workarounds. You create flexible software without over-engineering. You make appropriate trade-offs, re-use where possible, and are judicious about introducing dependencies. You are efficient with resource usage (e.g., system hardware, database, memory/CPU, etc.). You work on project ideas with customers, stakeholders, and peers. You help your team evolve by actively participating in the code review process, design discussions, team planning, and ticket/metric reviews. You focus on operational excellence, constructively identifying problems and proposing solutions. You take on projects and make software enhancements that improve team software and processes. You are able to train new team-mates on how your team’s software is constructed, how it operates, how secure it is, and how it fits into the bigger picture.

About the team

We are building SAMAI, our Gen AI powered automation platform that is redefining how RBS delivers at scale. SAMAI harnesses the power of LLMs, agentic AI workflows and cutting edge ML to automate complex retail business processes end to end. Think of it as the brain behind RBS's next generation automation, orchestrating intelligent agents that can reason, act and deliver outcomes that previously needed hundreds of human hours. We are not just using Gen AI as a feature; we are building a platform that makes GenAI the foundation of retail operations.

Basic qualifications - 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience - 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience - Experience programming with at least one software programming language - Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence

Preferred qualifications - 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience - Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent - Experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
