About the job
Amazon's Operations Global Engineering Materials & Sustainability (Ops GEMS) organisation sets the strategy, technical standards, and programme delivery that keep Amazon's operational estate safe, energy-efficient, and sustainable — spanning fulfilment centres, delivery stations, grocery, and fresh-food facilities worldwide. Within Ops GEMS, the Global Energy, Sustainability & Automation (GESA) team provides hands-on technical leadership for Amazon's global portfolio of building management systems (BMS), energy platforms, and refrigeration systems — driving safety, reliability, and energy reduction through deep engineering expertise combined with enterprise SCADA, monitoring, and analytics platforms. We are a small, high-impact team that partners closely with RME, D&C, and operational stakeholders across all regions.
Purpose of the Role - We are seeking an Refrigeration Engineer to take ownership of the refrigeration estate supporting Amazon's food delivery network across the Middle East and India. This is an agile role spanning varied projects — system optimisation, automation rollouts, failure investigations, and energy-reduction initiatives — with safety, reliability, and reducing energy consumption as the common thread. You will combine deep refrigeration knowledge with strong aptitude for automation, enterprise SCADA, and performance data analytics, working closely with the European refrigeration team (Barcelona) and Global BMS Technical Services. The ability to context-switch and deliver across concurrent workstreams is essential.
Key job responsibilities • Champion safety as the overriding priority across all refrigeration activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, Amazon safety policies, and food safety standards. • Drive reliability programmes that reduce unplanned downtime, extend asset life, and minimise risk across the portfolio. • Lead energy-reduction initiatives — identify consumption hotspots, establish measurable baselines, and implement control strategies that deliver sustained efficiency gains. • Support the deployment and optimisation of enterprise SCADA platforms for refrigeration monitoring across the Middle East and India estate, working controller-agnostic across diverse technology stacks. • Manage alarm rationalisation and tuning to reduce noise and surface genuine events that threaten safety or reliability. • Analyse performance data from SCADA historians and monitoring platforms to identify trends, anomalies, and optimisation opportunities. Generate reports and actionable insights for stakeholders. • Identify technical improvement and energy-efficiency opportunities across the regional refrigeration estate; evaluate emerging technologies and conduct feasibility studies. • Act as a trusted technical advisor to RME and Maintenance Operation Centres, providing specialist guidance beyond routine troubleshooting through the established escalation model. • Support D&C projects with operational best practices, lessons learned, and alignment with regional legislation and design standards. • Develop and deliver training material and contribute to a shared knowledge base covering fault modes, diagnostics, legislation, and spare parts management.
Basic qualifications - Experience gathering and analyzing large amounts of data and delivering continuous business improvements - Experience working effectively across cross-functional teams and partner well with people at all levels within an organization, including coaching of junior staff - Experience as a strong leader who can prioritize well, communicate clearly and effectively influence across cross-functional teams - 5+ years of refrigeration industry experience - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Refrigeration Engineering, HVAC/R Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline. Alternatively, a recognised advanced apprenticeship or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Refrigeration / Air Conditioning with substantial demonstrable industry experience.
Preferred qualifications - 3+ years of managing food safety and quality in a large-scale retail or manufacturing environment experience - 4+ years of commercial CO2 refrigeration applications experience, or experience in Amazon RME (Reliability, Maintenance, and Engineering), fulfillment operations, or automation deployment environments - Familiarity with multiple refrigeration controller platforms (e.g., Danfoss, Carel, Emerson/Dixell) and enterprise SCADA packages, with a controller-agnostic mindset. - Experience with cloud-based data analytics, IoT platforms, or predictive maintenance tools applied to refrigeration or HVAC/R systems.
