About the job
Lead a new India-based embedded and firmware engineering team for Just Walk Out's edge devices: the cameras, sensors, RFID, gates and networking hardware in our stores, and the device-side software that connects them to the cloud. This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You'll manage 8-12 engineers, set technical direction across firmware, embedded Linux and embedded Android, and partner closely with the US engineering team that owns this charter today.
Key job responsibilities - Hire, coach and develop a high-judgment team of embedded, firmware and edge software engineers, and build an inclusive, high-ownership culture as the team grows in India - Own the technical roadmap, delivery and operational excellence for your team's firmware and embedded software, from requirements and architecture through release and field support - Set engineering standards across the embedded stack: firmware and RTOS/bare-metal code, embedded Linux and Android, drivers and board bring-up, secure boot and OTA updates, and on-device diagnostics - Own the device-to-cloud boundary with cloud teams: provisioning and identity, connectivity, telemetry and remote management, including the device's AWS IoT / embedded-Linux connectivity stack - Build the test infrastructure, staged rollouts and telemetry needed to ship firmware safely across a large fleet of deployed devices - Lead the response to field issues, telling firmware from hardware, connectivity or sensor faults, and drive root cause and lasting fixes - Drive execution with the US engineering team, product and program management, hardware/ODM partners, and cloud, data and UI/UX teams across time zones
A day in the life You might start with 1:1s and a design review, helping an engineer reason through an OTA rollback path or a latency budget on a constrained target. Later you agree scope for the next release with product and the US partner team, and re-plan the sprint because a hardware revision changed what's possible. In the afternoon you join your engineers on a field issue affecting a few devices at one store, get them the telemetry and a plan, and keep the fix moving.
About the team Just Walk Out builds the technology behind checkout-free shopping: the devices, networking and cloud software that let shoppers walk out without stopping to pay. . This India team will take direct ownership of part of that charter, working closely with the US engineering team, hardware partners and the operations teams who rely on what we ship.
