About the job
Senior Technical Engineer - Backup/Storage Johnson Controls is seeking an experienced Senior Technical Engineer - Backup/Storage to support our global Rubrik backup environment. You will operate, implement, and continuously improve Rubrik data protection across on-premises, datacenter, and cloud workloads, ensuring backups are reliable, secure, recoverable, and compliant with recovery objectives. What you will do • Operate and support the global Rubrik environment, including Rubrik CDM clusters and Rubrik Security Cloud, covering daily health monitoring, job success, capacity, and upgrades. • Implement and expand Rubrik, including cluster and node deployment, workload onboarding, SLA domain design, replication, and archival. • Protect a wide range of workloads, including VMware vSphere, physical Windows, Linux, and AIX hosts, databases (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server), NAS file shares, and cloud workloads. • Manage SLA domains, retention, replication, and cloud archival policies aligned to business RPO and RTO requirements. • Troubleshoot failed backups and restores, perform root cause analysis, and work with Rubrik support on escalated cases. • Perform and coordinate restore testing, disaster recovery, and cyber recovery exercises, including immutable backups, anomaly detection, and ransomware recovery readiness. • Plan and execute Rubrik software upgrades, hardware refreshes, and capacity expansion across global sites. • Build backup reports and dashboards (e.g., Rubrik reports and Power BI) covering success rates, SLA compliance, capacity, and recovery readiness for the global landscape. • Automate routine operations and reporting using Rubrik REST APIs and scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Python), and maintain infrastructure-as-code where applicable. • Coordinate with storage, network, virtualization, database, security, and application teams, as well as datacenter partners and third-party vendors, to deliver and support backup services. • Manage incidents, problems, and changes through ITSM processes (e.g., ServiceNow), and provide evidence for internal and external audits. • Maintain runbooks, standards, and operational documentation, and mentor other engineers on Rubrik and backup best practices. • Evaluate new tools and technologies to improve backup performance, reliability, and operational efficiency. What you will need Required: • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. • 5+ years of hands-on experience in Rubrik operations and implementation, including Rubrik CDM and SLA-based policy management. • Experience protecting and restoring VMware, physical servers (Windows and Linux), databases, and NAS workloads with Rubrik. • Strong understanding of backup and recovery concepts, including RPO and RTO, retention, replication, immutability, air-gapped copies, and the 3-2-1 rule. • Good understanding of storage (SAN, NAS, and object storage) and of the networking needed for backup, such as DNS, NTP, firewalls, and bandwidth planning. • Strong Windows and Linux administration skills and scripting experience for automation. • Experience with cloud archival or backup targets such as AWS S3, Azure Blob, or OCI Object Storage. • Strong troubleshooting, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work with global teams and vendors. Preferred: • Rubrik certifications and experience with Rubrik Security Cloud (RSC). • Experience with other backup platforms (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Cohesity, NetBackup) and migrations to Rubrik. • Experience with Rubrik REST API, SDKs, or Terraform and Ansible automation. • Experience with Power BI for infrastructure and backup reporting. • Familiarity with recovery and resilience frameworks (e.g., NIST CSF, ISO 22301) and ITIL change management. • Experience with ServiceNow CMDB and asset discovery tools.
